Student Services counselors have taken several steps with students to prepare and equip them to make decisions regarding their post high school path. These include: college fair and college visits, trades fairs and visits, military visits, and the Viking-2-Viking series which exposed students to a variety of careers. Students know how to select a college and have been led through activities on Naviance which supports the college and career search process.
In April, school counselors met with all of the juniors in groups during their study halls. Junior students can do a few things over the summer to prepare them for their senior year and life after high school. As a parent, you are a valuable partner to this planning process and we ask you to be aware of and support the following tasks:
College Bound Students
- Complete campus visits over the summer to schools you are applying - Finalize your college list - Most students have a tentative list in their Naviance account - 3-5 schools may be enough, 5-8 schools would be recommended - Register to retake ACT/SAT, if needed - Complete a job shadow in a potential career of interest
**A College Essay Writing Workshop is being held before school on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 a.m.
Trade/Apprenticeship/Technical School Students
- Complete visits to trade or technical school
- Identify a trade or technical school program to pursue
- Do you have a connection to someone in that field?
- Make contact and discuss what steps you can take to gain employment after graduation.
- Is there a summer job opportunity your student could apply for?
- Complete a job shadow in a potential career of interest
Military/Police/Fire Department
- Meet with a recruiter to learn about different opportunities & answer questions
- Consider scheduling any required testing
Students also received contact information for recruiters and many other resources for college applications and job searches at our last meeting. All information and resources from this year can be found on the Student Services resource board in onCampus. Contact your child’s counselor with any questions or concerns. Counselors will begin meeting with students individually when school resumes in August to continue work on their post high school plan.
