WLHS sophomore students are required to take both a semester of Speech and Composition classes. This prepares them for the speaking and writing skills needed to finish high school, as well as life skills needed outside of school.
In speech class, students are required to collaborate with their team to problem solve how to stack cups using only rubber bands. This requires careful speaking and listening for teams to be successful. It also helps students learn to trust each other before presenting speeches throughout the semester.
In composition class, students attend tea parties. Teacher Ms. Claire Leverence ('19) brings the coffee and tea and the students bring the authentic, stimulating conversation and group norms. They come prepared to discuss whatever topics were assigned for that day such as a book for literary analysis or potential topics for an argumentative essay.
During the last tea party, the students debated diverse topics ranging from artificial intelligence to athletes’ pay. Students must provide evidence for their claims and argue them with the other group members. In a world full of opinions, it is important for students to not only learn how to express their views respectfully but also willingly hear someone else’s point of view. The activity should mimic real life coffee shop conversations.
