After extended study that included student, parent, and faculty focus sessions, WLHS will implement a new daily schedule in 2024-25 which has been approved by our Board of Directors. The new schedule aims to address three main limitations that faculty and students identified in our current daily schedule:
1. Most students prepare for seven different classes out of eight periods that meet every day. Both parents and students noted high stress in meeting academic expectations daily.
The new schedule will retain an eight period platform; however, only six periods will meet each day as two periods drop daily in rotation. Most students will prepare for five class periods each day with each class meeting only four times in a regular week.
2. Current class periods are 44 minutes long—typically shorter by comparison with other schools and a challenge for teachers to implement the kind of student collaboration that increases academic rigor.
The new schedule is designed for six 55-minute class periods each day.
3. WLHS is unusual among schools in that it has no built in resource or flex period each day.
The new schedule presents a 30-minute flex period in the middle of the day four days a week when no classes meet so that:
· students can get extra help from teachers,
· student groups and clubs can meet during the school day as opposed to outside the school day which is not feasible for all students, and
· student organizations can meet during the school day without students’ having to miss a class period or periods.
Wednesdays will remain late start (8:45 a.m.) days and will not include a flex period. Our all-school chapel service retains its place each morning as the spiritual anchor of the day.
