Mountaintop Tour
Our Viking Steel group performed an exciting send-off concert on June 20 in the WLHS parking lot. The talented steelpan musicians have embarked on a tour through Wisconsin, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa. The group will participate in worship services at churches along the way as well as play with Branches Band at the WELS International Youth Rally at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado on June 25 and 26.
Viking Steel began at Wisco in the winter of 2017. A small nine-member ensemble has grown into the largest steelband program in Wisconsin, including more than 60 high school students in three co-curricular bands, two summer camps for grade school students, and a summer ensemble. The band has performed for campus chapel, class reunions, private events, community parades, and numerous local church services.
Membership is open to students who read music from all grade levels. Most of these students are not first-career percussionists and have discovered their love for ensemble music-making through steel pan.
Viking Steel alum have gone on to study music at schools such as UW-Eau Claire, UW-Madison, Martin Luther College, Wisconsin Lutheran College, and Eastman School of Music, among others.
