Steelband Camp

For Coed Students Entering Grades 7-9 (limited to 19 students per session; sessions are identical)
The Viking Steel program provides students the opportunity to learn and play the traditional instruments of Trinidad and Tobago. Participants will learn how steel pans are built and tuned, discover how steelband arrangements are written, and will craft their own sticks to play with. Students will perform a small concert at the end of the week for family and friends who wish to attend.

Cost is $75

Registration for Steelband Camp is due
by Monday, June 24, 2024.

Notes:
This camp will be limited to 19 students per session due to the limited instrumentation.

Pre-requisite: Participants must know how to read music, but percussion experience is not necessary.

Staff
Mr. Quinten Petersen is the Fine Arts Department Coordinator at WLHS and has led the Viking Steel program from its inception in 2017. As a steel pan enthusiast, he has learned from pan players, builders, and tuners in Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, and the US. Additional staff will be comprised of current and former WLHS Viking Steel students.
