Sarah from China
This month we are proud to introduce Sarah, a junior (Grade 11) student from Shanghai, China!
What activities (clubs, teams, etc.) are you involved in?
I am involved in several clubs, including Forensics (a club for public speaking), Pilot (a club for school newspaper), VCLA (a group providing for upper-level students to improve their leadership and worship God together), the Global Leadership Team (group of leaders organizing activities for new international students and their mentors), and the Dance Team. These activities help me develop all aspects of myself and help me build my leadership, cooperation ability, and English skills. As an editor in the Pilot, I keep stepping out of my comfort zone and trying to edit articles and layouts. My English writing skills improve tremendously after repeated exercise. Furthermore, these activities make me feel accepted here and make new friends. I met people with similar interests in the Forensics club and built a strong relationship with them by having experience competing together. The most memorable moment for me was when all the Dance Team partners gathered together during Christmas and exchanged gifts. We made cookies, ate, and slapsticked together. At that moment, they were like my siblings.
Who has been a great influence on you at WLHS?
WLHS provided an inclusive and friendly atmosphere. I met people from different cultures and backgrounds and built strong friendships. My first American friend, who also greatly influenced me, is my mentor, Kayla Hartman, a senior last year. Before I came here, I emailed her regularly, asking about school life in WLHS and America. She created a clear image of American school life for me and enabled me to get mentally prepared. When the school year started, I learned a lot from her, and we built a strong friendship by experiencing many activities together. She also inspired me to join the Global Leadership Team this year to help new international students build relationships with their mentors.
What advice would you give to future students at WLHS?
WLHS provides various kinds of chances, and people with different goals and majors will grow here. Try to step out of your comfort zone and try things you have never tried before. You may find something interesting. Joining clubs and participating in activities can help you grow and feel better about yourself in a new school. Study hard, play hard, and enjoy your high school life.
