As summer approaches, it’s important to stay focused on your Academic and Career Planning (ACP) to ensure a smooth transition into senior year and beyond. Your ACP process is designed to guide you through the stages of Know, Explore, Plan, and Go, with special emphasis on Plan and Go during your junior and senior years. The summer months are crucial for preparing you to take full ownership of your future, so here’s a checklist to help you make the most of your time:
Xello is your tool for researching careers, completing assessments, and building your personalized academic and career plan. Parents, check in on your student's progress in Xello and encourage discussions about their future goals.Parents who have not yet set up their family account recently received an email invitation to complete the setup.
Take time to reflect on the work you’ve done throughout grades 9-11. Consider how your coursework, experiences, and skills have prepared you for life after high school. Are you meeting national standards and Wisco’s benchmarks for college, career, and life readiness? Stay engaged, seek support when needed, and use the Blueprint for Readiness to track your progress and plan for your future goals. The effort you’ve put in so far is shaping your path—keep moving forward with purpose!
Use Xello, career-based learning experiences, and school resources to continue exploring careers. Job-shadowing, internships, or volunteering can provide valuable real-world experience that helps you make more informed decisions about your future.
Summer Tasks for Juniors:
Counselors will meet the last week of April with juniors to discuss post-high school plans. Here's what you can do over the summer to stay ahead:
For College-Bound Students:
Complete campus visits to schools you’re applying to.
Finalize your college list in Xello (3-5 schools is a good start, but 5-8 is recommended).
Register to retake the ACT/SAT, if necessary.
Complete a job shadow in a career you're interested in. Use the career-based learning experiences link above.
Attend the College Essay Writing Workshop on May 14th before school. Information will be shared in the daily announcements as we get closer to the date.
For Trade/Apprenticeship/Technical School Students:
Visit trade or technical schools and explore available programs.
Identify a program to pursue and connect with professionals in that field to discuss next steps.
Consider job opportunities for the summer or look for job-shadowing experiences.
For Military/Police/Fire Department Aspirants:
Meet with recruiters to explore different career opportunities and ask questions.
Consider scheduling required testing if applicable.
All ACP-related resources and information from this year are available on the Student Services Resource Board in onCampus. If you have any questions, reach out to your student’s counselor. Counselors will meet with students individually when school resumes in August to continue finalizing post-high school plans. By staying engaged with Xello and completing summer tasks, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful senior year and future!
