Wisco Student Attends 4-H Conference in Washington D.C.
Junior Brooklyn Jones attended Ignite by 4-H, an inclusive teen event held in Washington, D.C. on March 9-12. More than 650 young adults attended this summit which focused on agriculture, health, and STEM sciences. Brooklyn and her 4-H teammates attended as a part of their project, "Lead to Change," which is an initiative to start a statewide agricultural ambassador club in Wisconsin. At the conference, Brooklyn attended seminars, participated in mental health discussions, met with her 4-H group to research other agricultural ambassadors groups, had the opportunity to attend night tours of Washington D.C. and visit the Holocaust museum, and even heard a keynote by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy.
"My favorite part of the conference was touring the monuments in the Washington Mall, and also hearing the keynote message Hearts in the Ice by Sunniva Sorby," says Brooklyn. Polar explorer Sunniva Sorby spent 19 months, including two long winters, in an uninsulated 1930 trapper's hut on the Arctic island of Svalbard, which is halfway to the North Pole from northern Norway, conducting research. Sorby was accompanied by a fellow researcher and one dog.
