One of the most effective ways to learn a concept is to teach it to someone else. In her English Foundations class, Mrs. Lisa Rouse ('02) uses this strategy with success. Following her lesson on recognizing rhetorical devices in Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches (such as repetitions, metaphors, and allusions), students worked in teams and took turns finding other expressions and explaining in their own words how the expression is functioning in that passage. Added bonus: Maybe the seed of “future teacher” is planted in some.
