Vikings Come Back to Win on the Road

The Viking basketball team opened a tough Woodland Conference slate with a rugged 70-65 victory at West Allis Central on Tuesday night. The team overcame a nine-point deficit and a first half in which they shot just 26% to gain the victory.

Kon Knueppel's three-pointer with 13:24 to play capped an 11-2 Wisco run and drew the Vikings even for the first time since early in the game at 39-39. Later, Jonah Rindfleisch scored nine consecutive points for the Vikings as the two teams traded the lead back and forth. Central pulled back in front 61-59 with just under four minutes to play. But Landon Key found Prentice Young behind the arc, and the sophomore drilled his second triple of the night to put Wisco in front for good. Young found Rindfleisch for a score to give the Vikings some breathing room at 64-61, and Key scored the next two times down to help neutralize Bulldog baskets. Rindfleisch iced the game by connecting on two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game.

Rindfleisch led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds. Young added 12 points and seven rebounds. Key scored eight of his 11 points at crucial junctures in the second half, and Knueppel was a perfect on three attempts from behind the arc for nine points; he also added a team-high four assists. The Vikings enjoyed a 41-28 advantage on the glass, including 14-3 on the offensive boards. More stats are available here.
